After days of traveling, Ash, Misty, and Pikachu finally make it out of the Viridian Forest, and taking Route 2 to the north, they arrive in Pewter City.
Pewter is a large city in northwestern Kanto, and is surrounded by cliff-faces and crags. It connects to Viridian City via Route 2 to the south, and to Mount Moon via route 3 to the east.

Caterpie fulfills its desire of evolving into Butterfree, and using its Sleep Powder attack, sends the Beedrill, Weedle, and Team Rocket into a slumber. Samurai changes his opinion about Ash, and is now impressed by the way he handled the situation.
The group finally makes it out of the Viridian forest. Samurai shows Ash, Misty, and Pikachu the road to Pewter City, and inspired by this new friendship, promises to continue improving his own techniques.

Samurai scolds Ash for failing to capture Weedle and abandoning Metapod. The next morning, Ash goes back to the hive, but now he also has to deal with Team Rocket. Jessie and James are so loud that they wake up the Beedrill, and chaos ensues.
Ash reaches Metapod, who loses all confidence in him for abandoning it. Ash takes responsibility, and accepts the blame for his inaction. Moved by this, Metapod saves Ash and begins to evolve.

The Weedle that escaped Ash alerts its hive, and now a swarm of Beedrill -its evolved form- is about to attack the group with their poisonous sting. In the confusion, a Beedrill kidnaps Ash's Metapod.
Running from the swarm, the group comes across a cluster of Kakuna, that begin evolving into more Beedrill. Getting away to hide in Samurai's log cabin, they leave Metapod behind.

Ash, Misty, and Pikachu continue their journey through the Viridian Forest, when they come across Weedle, a bug-type Pokémon. Ash uses his Pidgeotto to weaken it, but when he is about to capture it, is distracted by a young Samurai, and Weedle escapes.
The Samurai, who is a bug catcher, challenges Ash in combat, but they reach a stalemate when both of them use their immovable Metapods.

Fresh from his first official victory as a trainer, Ash receives another surprise when his Caterpie evolves to the next stage and becomes a Metapod. According to his Pokédex, a specimen like this had never reached its next stage so fast.
Re-energized by his recent wins, Ash is more than ready to continue exploring the Viridian Forest. The team leaves camp, and head to their next adventure.

The group spends the night in the forest. The next morning, a Pidgeotto lands near their camp, and Ash makes his second catch ever, by capturing the flying Pokémon. Despite this, he proves he has poor strategy and has much to learn about being a trainer.
Team Rocket appears, and trying to steal Pikachu, incapacitate it with Koffing's sludge. Pidgeotto is defeated by Ekans and Koffing's double slam. It comes down to timid Caterpie to save the day using a String Shot attack. Team Rocket flees leaving only this rose.

Soon after entering the Viridian Forest, Ash, Misty, and Pikachu reach this clearing, where they come across Caterpie, a bug-type Pokémon. Ash jumps at the opportunity, and surprisingly, he is able to capture it with relative ease.
While young Ketchum can't stop celebrating this major milestone in his quest, and Pikachu becomes acquainted with the little bug, Misty is horrified, because she is scared of it; to the point that she is being hurtful of Caterpie's feelings.

After the events of the previous night, Ash, Misty, and Pikachu leave Viridian City. Taking Route 2 to the north, they enter the mysterious Viridian Forest on their way to Pewter City.
This thick and sprawling woodland is full of bug-type Pokémon, and it is not too long before the group comes across one of them. Will this be an opportunity for Ash to capture his first Pokémon?
