Mount Moon in a Kanto Region Map

A mystical mountain known for meteor impacts.

Mount Moon is located in northern Kanto, and connects to Pewter City via Route 3 to the west, and to Cerulean City via Route 4 to the east.

Kanto Route 4

Seymour decides to stay in Mount Moon living with the Clefairy and Clefable to protect them, and also to continue researching the moon Stone, hoping that one day they will take him to outer space.

Ash, Misty, Brock, and Pikachu descend Mount Moon via Route 4, and get to a fork in the road: will they continue east via Route 4 to Cerulean City, or to the south via Route 5? Ash is adamant on going to Cerulean, but Misty refuses to go there. Why?

Mount Moon

Seymour convinces the Clefairy to take the Moon Stone back from its robbers. While Ash and company stop Team Rocket's getaway, the fairy Pokémon use a Metronome attack to make the Moon Stone explode in a million pieces.

The rain of sparkly shards prompts many of the Clefairy to evolve into Clefable, one of the rarest Pokémon species in the world. Later, the fairies take the remaining pieces back to the cave, and forming a new Moon Stone, start dancing again.

The Moon Stone

Pikachu makes friends with Clefairy, who takes everyone up Mount Moon again, and into another cave, where the core of the legendary Moon Stone sits. Clefairy places its shiny rock next to the large core, and the chamber begins to glow.

More Clefairy come out and start dancing around the Moon Stone, but Team Rocket steals the Moon Stone in the middle of a Smokescreen attack by Koffings, and escape through a tunnel dug by Ekans.

Mount Moon

In the middle of the confusion, Clefairy leaves the cave and skips to the river, while Meowth chases after it. Misty and Seymour try to help, but they fall in the river when Clefairy jumps from this natural bridge in the canyon.

When Meowth is about to launch a Scratch attack, Misty uses her Staryu to protect them with its Swift and Water Gun attacks.

Inside Mount Moon

Seymour believes that someone is after the Moon Stone, a rock from outer space that according to legend, augments a Pokémon's powers. Suddenly, Clefairy, a very rare type of Pokémon skips past them carrying a shiny rock. The group decides to leave it alone.

Seconds later, Clefairy yells in horror, because Team Rocket -responsible for disturbing the Pokémon inside the caves- is trying to steal its shiny rock. Ash's Pikachu and Brock's new Zubat get rid of Jessie, James, Ekans, and Koffing.

Mount Moon

Going east via Route 3, the group is climbing Mount Moon, a mythical place surrounded by legends. Suddenly, the screams from a scientist named Seymour get everyone's attention, and they go to help him.

Seymour is being attacked by a colony of Zubat. Pikachu uses Thunder Shock to scatter the Zubat and make them retreat into a nearby cave. Seymour explains that someone is stringing lights inside the cave and disturbing the Pokémon who live there.
