Nurse Joy takes Ash, Misty, Brock, Pikachu, and Officer Jenny to the infirmary, so they can see the sick Pokémon: Cubone, Oddish, and Magikarp are completely lethargic; the flame on Charmander's tail is about to fade out, and Psyduck is the sickest of them all.

The mystery deepens when Joy tells them that the Pokémon started to get sick three days ago, which is exactly when the children disappeared. Then, Jenny's portable sleep wavelength detector starts buzzing; they deduce that all these events are connected.

Officer Jenny and the gang go to the HopHopHop Pokémon Center to interview children who may hold clues as to the whereabouts of those that went missing three days ago. None of the kids have any idea where the other children may have gone.

Ash and Misty talk to Nurse Joy as part of the investigation, but she is busy with a mystery of her own: She is taking care of five Pokémon that have lost all their energy, and she cannot understand why!

Pikachu is rushed back to the Pokémon Center for treatment, but its injuries are more emotional than physical, after the terrible defeat. Nurse Joy presents Ash with a possible solution: a Thunder Stone! It can evolve Pikachu into Raichu, and put it in a level field.

Ash considers using the Thunder Stone, but Brock warns him that Pikachu will change forever. Spying through the window, Team Rocket hears how Pikachu passionately refuses to use the stone, choosing instead to fight again as it is, for its honor.

After two weeks wandering in the forest, the team finally makes it to Vermilion City. Misty and Brock want to rest and clean up. Ash? He wants to challenge the local gym leader, but his friends make him realize that Pikachu is tired and hungry.

Pikachu is taken to the Pokémon Center, where Nurse Joy and Chansey are overwhelmed. Lately, several Pokémon have been brought for medical attention after losing matches against gym leader, Lt. Surge.

Back again at the Pokémon Center, the kids beg Joyce to help Charmander. She takes it to the emergency room, but it is too weak, and its flame is almost out. After long hours of treatment in the ICU, Joy lets them know that Charmander will recover.

The next morning, Brock wakes everyone up: Charmander is gone! It escaped through the window once it healed. They are sure it went back to the same rock to wait for its trainer, Damian.

The winding road finally takes our heroes to a Pokémon center, where they can rest. And this happens just in time, because a bad storm starts brewing. The hours pass and Brock can't stop wondering if the little Charmander is doing okay.

In the dining room, they overhear a guy named Damian and his buddies bragging about how he left his weak Charmander sitting on a rock with the false promise that he would come back for him. Brock loses his cool and shakes Damian up.

Ash takes Pikachu, Pidgeotto, and Butterfree to the local Pokémon center to be revitalized. There, they are assisted by Nurse Joy, older sister to Viridian City's Nurse Joy.

Here, Ash finds out about the Pokémon League Regional Championships. Misty explains that to enter the championships, he must beat the gym leaders from different towns and gather their badges as proof.

Pokémon Center in Ruins

Nurse Joy teleports all the Poké Balls in the center to Pewter City, in order to protect them from the rampage of the Pokémon thieves. Meanwhile, Ash and Misty confront Team Rocket's Ekans and Koffing without much success.

The intruders are defeated when Pikachu's overcharged Thunder Shock attack destroys the Pokémon Center. This makes Team Rocket realize that Pikachu is a rare Pokémon indeed.

The Pokémon center is now in ruins.

Misty catches up with Ash at the Pokémon center. She is furious because the bike he stole from her is in pieces. Nurse Joy lets them know that her treatment was a success, and Pikachu will be okay.

The Pokémon thieves break into the center, and reveal themselves as Team Rocket, a gang of misfits intent on ransacking the facility in search of rare and valuable Pokémon.

Viridian City Pokémon Center

The Pokémon center is a facility that offers trainers and their Pokémon different services, chiefly among them, healthcare. Attended by Nurse Joy and assisted by Chansey, the center in Viridian is huge.

Due to all the injuries sustained during the fight with the Spearow, Pikachu is taken to the critical care unit. Nurse Joy promises she will do everything she can for it.
