Professor Oak informs Ash that his grandson Gary and the other two Pallet Town trainers have already been to Celadon City, and each one has earned five gym badges. Not only that, Gary has caught a lot of Pokémon, which means Ash is falling behind.

Krabby is the only Pokémon the Professor has received from Ash so far, so he puts pressure on the young trainer to increase his catch count if he wants to achieve his goals. With that, the Professor ends the call to continue enjoying his tea.

It's early morning in Pallet Town, and Professor Oak is enjoying a cup of tea before starting his day. Krabby brings the video phone to him, because a call is coming in. It's Ash, calling from Route 7 between Saffron City and Celadon City.

Ash wants to check in with the Professor, and proudly shows him the four gym badges he has earned so far during his travels through the Kanto Region. The Pokémon expert is not too impressed with Ash's progress, however.

All the new students have already claimed their first partner Pokémon here, at Professor Oak's laboratory, but because Ash arrived late, he missed his pick.

Ash begs the Professor for a Pokémon; unfortunately, the only one left is a problematic Pikachu that refuses to get along with him. The Professor also gives Ash a Pokédex named Dexter.

Still in his pajamas -because he overslept- Ash sprints from home all the way to Professor Oak's laboratory, but arriving late, he misses the chance to claim any of the available Pokémon choices.

As part of their official training, 10-year old students can get their license and a first partner Pokémon. Ash will get his from Professor Oak, Kanto Region's authority in all things Pokémon.

Pallet is located in a peninsula Southwest of the Kanto Region. The village has two main routes: To the north is the only road, Route 1 to Viridian City. To the south is water route 21 to Cinnabar Island.
