Conflagration at the Celadon Gym

The explosion causes a fire to spread throughout the gym. Erika orders the evacuation of the premises, and the trainers promptly take all the Pokémon outside. Misty's Starmie and Staryu, as well as Ash's Squirtle use their Water Guns while the firefighters arrive.

Erika takes a census of all the Pokémon, and realizes that her Gloom is nowhere to be found. Ash realizes it is still in the gym, and with no regard for his own safety, rushes back inside, following its cries for help. Gloom is in the stage terrified, and surrounded by fire.

Celadon Gym Combat Stage

In the first round of the battle, Erika's Tangela defeats Ash's Bulbasaur with its Stun Spore attack. For the second round, Ash thinks of sending Primeape, but it is too wild, so he sends Charmander, who knocks out Erika's Weepinbell with its Skull Bash attack.

When the third round between Pikachu and Erika's Gloom is about to start, Team Rocket barges in. Meowth sets the bomb off sooner than Jessie and James expected, but despite getting blasted off, they feel victorious because they stole the secret formula.

The Celadon Gym

Disguised as a happy family, Ash and Team Rocket return that night to the Celadon Gym with the pretext of enrolling "daughter Ashley" into Pokémon training classes. Ash recognizes the receptionist as one of the perfumery sales girls, but she does not see through his charade.

While "Ashley" registers at the reception desk, Jessie and James ditch their costumes to continue looking for the secret formula, and Meowth plants a blaster in the gym's combat stage as retribution for kicking them out earlier.

The Greenhouse

While searching for the perfume secret formula in the greenhouse, Team Rocket finds a Gloom napping. Rather than walking away from the foul-smelling Pokémon, James wakes it up, and startled, makes Koffing use Poison Gas attack against it.

To everyone's surprise, Gloom does not even flinch as it inhales the poison gas. Instead, the grass Pokémon metabolizes it and gives it out as a fume so stinky, so putrid, so revolting, that Team Rocket is instantly shattered to pieces.

The Celadon Gym

After getting kicked out of the Perfumery, Ash heads to the Pokémon Gym, which is where he actually wants to be. Much to his dismay, however, he is denied entry upon arriving. Word has spread that he is badmouthing the local fragrances and is banned from the facilities.

Meanwhile, Team Rocket is sneaking into the gym, which also serves as a perfume factory. Seeking to steal the secret formula for the most popular scent, Jessie, James, and Meowth enter the building through a back window, and look for the greenhouse.

The Decisive Match

Ash finds Team Rocket at the bottom of the pot hole they created upon hitting the street, and realizes that Haunter was trying to stop them from stealing Pikachu. He begs the Ghost Pokémon to help him against Sabrina, and it agrees to come with him.

Back again at the Gym, it looks like Haunter has run away once more, which means that Pikachu will have to battle Kadabra for the second time. Unexpectedly, Haunter appears in front of Sabrina, and starts pulling faces again and playing pranks on her.

Haunter has disappeared, leaving Ash high and dry. None of his Pokémon want to battle Sabrina either, and she is ready to make everyone honor their promise to play with her. Terrified of what will happen next, Ash forfeits the match and runs away.

Misty and Brock try to escape as well, but they fall behind, and Sabrina uses her psychic powers to turn them into rag dolls. Just when she is about to do the same to Ash and his Pokémon, the jogging man appears and teleports them away.

Sabrina's Gym

Misty and Brock are not too optimistic that Ash will be able to defeat Sabrina, even with Haunter's help; after all, she is very powerful, and so is her Kadabra. Ash, however, is confident that he will succeed, and so, they go into the gym together.

Sabrina, levitating away from her throne, accepts the rematch, warning everyone that if she wins, they will become her playthings again; then, she sends Kadabra to the combat stage. Ash calls on Haunter to fight, but it is nowhere to be found.

Sabrina's Dollhouse Toybox

The battle begins, and Pikachu's powers prove useless against the teleportation abilities of Sabrina's Abra. Then, she makes Abra evolve into Kadabra, and use Confusion Attack to turn Pikachu's own Thunder Shock against it.

Kadabra uses Psychic Attack to badly beat Pikachu, and left with no other option, Ash forfeits the match. Sabrina forces him to honor his promise, and with her telekinesis miniaturizes the heroes, and teleports them to her dollhouse toybox.

Sabrina's Gym

Disregarding the jogging man's warning, the heroes enter Sabrina's gym. Inside, they see several individuals conducting experiments in telepathy and telekinesis. One of them takes Ash and his friends to the combat stage, which looks more like a temple.

The little girl from before is in the back of the stage. Ash demands a match, and she makes him promise that if he loses, they have to let her play with them. It turns out the little girl is really a doll sitting on the lap of gym leader Sabrina!

The little girl from the forest appears in Team Rocket's control room, and emanating a bright aura around her, she freezes Jessie and James in place. Then, she takes Pikachu, and materializes in the sealed room where Ash, Misty, and Brock are being held.

Without saying a word, the little girl uses her abilities again to teleport the gang in front of a large and eerie venue. A bearded man passes by, and advises Ash to stay away from Sabrina's Gym if he wants to enter the Pokémon League; then, he jogs away.

Rematch at the Combat Stage

Brock figures that if Lt. Surge forced his Pokémon to evolve into Raichu too early, then it never learned the speed and agility moves of a normal Pikachu, and that's where its weakness lies.

Raichu unleashes its strongest Thunderbolt Attack yet, which is so powerful that it destroys the combat stage. When the dust clears, Pikachu is unharmed after it uses its tail to ground itself.

Vermilion Gym Combat Stage

Lt. Surge sends a Raichu to the combat stage. Just like his trainer, Raichu has a tough attitude, and the power to back it up. Surge gloats that he forced his Pikachu to evolve into Raichu as soon as he got it.

In reality, Pikachu is not prepared for this combat, and receives a brutal beating by Raichu, which is superior in strength and electrical power. Hidden in the bushes behind the Gym, Team Rocket surprisingly laments this outcome.

A.J.'s Pokémon Gym

While everyone argues about A.J.'s tactics, Team Rocket sneaks into the gym to kidnap Pikachu; however, they take Sandshrew by mistake. The ground-type Pokémon is so well trained, that it escapes capture and returns to the gym.

Seeing how A.J. and his other Pokémon celebrate Sandshrew's return, Ash understands that there are other ways of being a good trainer. Team Rocket shows up again, but A.J. challenges them. His Sandshrew defeats Ekans, Koffings, and Meowth, giving them their 100th victory!

Ash offers A.J. to join him and the rest of the group, but he declines. He closes the gym and begins the journey with his Pokémon to start collecting badges.

A.J.'s Pokémon Gym

The battle takes place in this combat stage. A.J. uses Sandshrew, and Ash uses Pidgeotto and then Butterfree, which are supposed to have the advantage. Things don't work out, though, because Sandshrew wins.

Misty and Brock wonder how Sandshrew could get so strong to defeat Pidgeotto and Butterfree, but the answer is evident once they enter the gym: A.J. runs an extremely tiring and demanding training program. Ash finds it violent and unethical.

A.J.'s Pokémon Gym

A.J. is a young man who trains wild Pokémon. He is undefeated around these lands, having won 98 battles. He built a non-sanctioned gym all by himself, and uses it to train Pokémon and to take on challengers.

A.J. is quite arrogant, but so is Ash, who thinks that he can take on anything after getting the Boulder and Cascade badges. A.J. feels differently about badges; he will only start seeking them after he completes 100 victories.

The Sensational Sisters have lost all interest in combating, and are more focused on their aquatic show; so when Ash challenges them, they decide to just grant him the Cascade Badge without a battle.

Ash prefers to earn the Badge fair and square, but the sisters insist on just giving it to him. When he is about to accept it, the fourth sister shows up in the gym... it's Misty, and she is one of the gym leaders!

The Cerulean Gym

This is the Cerulean Gym. It is led by Violet, Daisy, and Lily, also known as "The Sensational Sisters," for their impressive water acrobatics and synchronized swimming. The gym also has an immense aquarium.

Nowadays, the gym is being used as a performance stage for the sisters, rather than a Pokémon training facility, because the sisters were defeated in combat by three Pallet Town trainers, and their Pokémon are healing in the Pokémon Center.
