The true ghost of the maiden appears off the coast to thank Gastly for keeping her legend alive, as it leaves town to haunt other festivals. The gas Pokémon visits Maiden's Peak every year, so people will never forget the myth of the woman who turned to stone.
Gastly promises that if it ever finds the brave warrior in its travels, it will tell him that his beloved is still at the edge of the cliff waiting for him to return. In the meantime, Gastly will continue making a quick buck selling ofuda talismans.

Ash and Team Rocket use their Pokémon to battle Gastly, but with its powers it summons each Pokémon's greatest fears and weaknesses to haunt them until dawn. As the sun rises, however, Gastly fades away, promising to return the following year for the next Festival.
Summer is ending, and the festivities are coming to a close. The two teams join the final night of celebrations, and floating lanterns are released into the ocean to guide the spirits of the departed.

The two groups spend most of the day covering every surface with the ofuda talismans, but it al has been for naught, because when night falls again, the ghost of the maiden appears to terrorize everyone with otherworldly apparitions.
Thinking that the specters are Pokémon, Ash uses his Pokédex to pinpoint them, but it cannot. Only when he accidentally directs it to the ghost of the maiden, Dexter identifies it as Gastly, a gas Pokémon who has been posing as the maiden and the old woman.

Team Rocket cannot steal the painting because James has vanished, and the next morning, while searching for him up in the Peak, Jessie and Meowth find Ash, Misty, and Pikachu also looking for Brock.
When the boys are found in the shrine, they are still in a trance. The old woman appears before them and offers a solution to protect them from the spell of the maiden: She has ofuda talismans for sale!

Ensorcelled by the mysterious young woman, Brock and James run up to the cliff in Maiden's Peak. While Jessie and Meowth are able to dissuade James to come with them and steal the painting, Brock refuses to go back with Ash and Misty to the Pokémon Center.
The hours pass, and Brock has not returned. Ash and Misty want to go back to the Peak for him, but Nurse Joy does not allow them to leave the center at such late hours, and she closes for the night, leaving them locked in.

Once a year, a valuable painting is removed from the maiden's shrine, up in the peak, and displayed to the public at the town's shrine. Brock and James recognize the figure in the painting as the same woman they saw at the port, and so the priest tells her story...
2,000 years ago, the maiden stood on the peak to bid farewell to the brave warrior she loved, as he sailed away to fight in a war. She waited for him at the cliff, but he never returned. There she stood, until she turned into stone. And she still awaits.

Ash and Misty are enjoying the festival, while Brock keeps thinking about the woman he saw. Suddenly, an old woman approaches him and warns him to beware of beautiful women, lest he meets a cruel fate.
While Team Rocket scours the streets for dropped change, the old woman appears and gives James the same warning. When Officer Jenny approaches them to see what they are doing, the trio runs away and hides in a crowd gathered around a shrine.

It's been a long journey, but the heroes are finally back in the mainland. Disembarking from the ferry that brought them from Hatoba Port, Ash and his friends arrive in Maiden's Peak, a port city currently celebrating its End of Summer Festival.
While getting off the ship, Brock sees a beautiful woman standing on the berth, but when he gets momentarily distracted by the other passengers debarking, the woman disappears. The same thing happens to James as Team Rocket sneaks into the port.
