Brock gives Ash a Boulder Badge for showing kindness to Pokémon, and because even though he stopped, he would have beaten Onix during the match. Flint appears and reveals he is Brock's father.
Flint encourages Brock to go follow his dream of becoming the best Pokémon breeder, while he takes care of the children. Brock joins Ash, Misty, and Pikachu as they take Kanto Route 3 to the east.

Ash returns to Pewter Gym for a rematch, and while Pikachu does well against Brock's Geodude, still cannot defeat his Onix. Brock takes pity on Pikachu and halts the battle before it gets hurt.
Ash has the chance to defeat Onix when the emergency sprinklers go off, but his conscience does not let him beat a trainer who cares for ten siblings. The challenge ends with neither training winning.

Ash decides he wants to challenge Brock again, but to do so, he needs a better strategy. Flint takes him to an abandoned power generation plant, and makes him manually activate the rolling mill.
Meanwhile, Pikachu is connected to a pair of diodes to get him re-energized. The more Ash rolls the mill, the more Pikachu is being supercharged, and the air crackles with all the power generated.

Flint, a strange man from Pewter who sells rocks, invites a morally defeated Ash to his house while Pikachu recovers from the battle. Ash wonders why Brock being so good, has never been in a Championship.
Flint explains that Brock has to take care of all his brothers and sisters, because he is father and mother to all of them; therefore, he can never leave Pewter despite all his talent.

After learning about the Regional Championships, Ash rushes to the Pewter Gym and barges in demanding to see its trainer. Enter Brock, the gym leader, who accepts Ash's challenge according to regulation.
It is not a long match, however, because Brock's Onix easily defeats the inexperienced Pikachu, whose Thunder Shock attack proves ineffective against the giant rock Pokémon. Ash is forced to forfeit the battle.

Ash takes Pikachu, Pidgeotto, and Butterfree to the local Pokémon center to be revitalized. There, they are assisted by Nurse Joy, older sister to Viridian City's Nurse Joy.
Here, Ash finds out about the Pokémon League Regional Championships. Misty explains that to enter the championships, he must beat the gym leaders from different towns and gather their badges as proof.

After days of traveling, Ash, Misty, and Pikachu finally make it out of the Viridian Forest, and taking Route 2 to the north, they arrive in Pewter City.
Pewter is a large city in northwestern Kanto, and is surrounded by cliff-faces and crags. It connects to Viridian City via Route 2 to the south, and to Mount Moon via route 3 to the east.
