Saffron City

The gang enters the city, where they are welcomed by a pair of hula girls who throw a huge celebration upon their arrival: they are the one millionth visitors, and as such, Saffron is awarding them a prize.

The hula girls take the trainers to a building, and promptly trap them in a sealed room. Revealing their  true identities, Jessie and James steal Pikachu, and run to their control room, from where they taunt Ash and his friends.

The gate to Saffron City welcomes all visitors.

Saffron City

Ash chases after the mysterious girl, but he cannot see anything. Not realizing where he is going, he goes off a tall cliff, but is saved right on time by Bulbasaur, who uses its vines to catch him in mid-air.

The little girl is nowhere to be found, but the good news is that she led them to Saffron, the largest city in the Kanto Region. Now Ash can challenge Sabrina, the gym leader, and earn a Marsh Badge.

A Spooky Forest

On their way to Saffron City the gang gets lost once again; only this time, it's getting dark and the forest is turning spooky. Ash and Misty are fighting over who is at fault, while Brock and Pikachu try to calm things down.

An eerie laughter stops everyone in their tracks. The fog is thick, and barely anything can be seen, but it looks like a little girl is coming out of the woods playing with her ball. Ash tries to talk to her, but she runs back into the darkness.

Flying Into the Sunset

Pikachu is carried by Butterfree to the helicopter, where it releases a powerful Thunder Shock Attack that sends Team Rocket blasting off. With the crisis averted, the pink beauty turns its attention to the heroic Butterfree, and a romance is born.

As the sun sets in the coast, it is time to part ways. After raising a timid Caterpie into the brave Butterfree it has become, Ash must let his Pokémon go, so it can start a family of its own. Flying into the horizon with its pink beauty, Butterfree says goodbye to its friends.

Team Rocket's Hideout

The balloon races after Butterfree, who is following the helicopter to a deep canyon. Team Rocket takes the stolen Butterfree to a warehouse at the bottom of the gorge, rejoicing in their triumph.

The heroes break into the hideout, and while Misty's Starmie chases Team Rocket, Butterfree painstakingly rips the net, releasing the captured Pokémon. Jessie, James, and Meowth refuse to give up, and board the helicopter to resume their hunt.

Trouble in the Air

Despite following the advice of its love coaches, Butterfree still cannot attract the pink beauty's attention. Abruptly, a helicopter swoops in clearing its way through the balloons; it's Team Rocket, and they are here to cause trouble.

A giant net is deployed from the chopper, and with it, Team Rocket traps all the Butterfree, except Ash's, who uses its Tackle and Spore attacks on the helicopter without success. The Pokémon thieves fly away with their quarry.

Hiding in the Forest

Butterfree tries its best to get the attention of the pink beauty, only to be ignored, and ultimately slapped in the face. Heartbroken and ashamed, Butterfree flies away from the kaleidoscope, and into the forest.

The balloon lands in a clearing, and the group finds Butterfree crying near a tree. Misty encourages it to treat the courtship like a boxing match, Brock spiffs it up with a new scarf, and Ash motivates it to keep trying and not give up.

A Hot Air Balloon Ride

The gang is on its way to Saffron City, and leaving the forest to walk along the coast, they see a kaleidoscope of Butterfree. Brock explains it is their mating season, and they fly away to have their Caterpie beyond the sea.

Ash and his friends rent a hot air balloon, and soon are joined by other trainers that release their Butterfree so they can find a mate. Ash releases his as well, and it is soon infatuated by a beautiful pink Butterfree.

Maiden's Peak in a Kanto Region Map

The presumed location of Maiden's Peak, based on the heroes' travels, is in a cape somewhere near Saffron City and Celadon City. While this is not confirmed, Kanto's geography and old maps suggest this is the most likely place.

Other Festivals Await

The true ghost of the maiden appears off the coast to thank Gastly for keeping her legend alive, as it leaves town to haunt other festivals. The gas Pokémon visits Maiden's Peak every year, so people will never forget the myth of the woman who turned to stone.

Gastly promises that if it ever finds the brave warrior in its travels, it will tell him that his beloved is still at the edge of the cliff waiting for him to return. In the meantime, Gastly will continue making a quick buck selling ofuda talismans.

It's the end of Summer

Ash and Team Rocket use their Pokémon to battle Gastly, but with its powers it summons each Pokémon's greatest fears and weaknesses to haunt them until dawn. As the sun rises, however, Gastly fades away, promising to return the following year for the next Festival.

Summer is ending, and the festivities are coming to a close. The two teams join the final night of celebrations, and floating lanterns are released into the ocean to guide the spirits of the departed.

Maiden's Peak

The two groups spend most of the day covering every surface with the ofuda talismans, but it al has been for naught, because when night falls again, the ghost of the maiden appears to terrorize everyone with otherworldly apparitions.

Thinking that the specters are Pokémon, Ash uses his Pokédex to pinpoint them, but it cannot. Only when he accidentally directs it to the ghost of the maiden, Dexter identifies it as Gastly, a gas Pokémon who has been posing as the maiden and the old woman.

Can anything stop the curse of the maiden?

Maiden's Peak

Team Rocket cannot steal the painting because James has vanished, and the next morning, while searching for him up in the Peak, Jessie and Meowth find Ash, Misty, and Pikachu also looking for Brock.

When the boys are found in the shrine, they are still in a trance. The old woman appears before them and offers a solution to protect them from the spell of the maiden: She has ofuda talismans for sale!

The Pokémon Center

Ensorcelled by the mysterious young woman, Brock and James run up to the cliff in Maiden's Peak. While Jessie and Meowth are able to dissuade James to come with them and steal the painting, Brock refuses to go back with Ash and Misty to the Pokémon Center.

The hours pass, and Brock has not returned. Ash and Misty want to go back to the Peak for him, but Nurse Joy does not allow them to leave the center at such late hours, and she closes for the night, leaving them locked in.

The Legend of Maiden's Peak

Once a year, a valuable painting is removed from the maiden's shrine, up in the peak, and displayed to the public at the town's shrine. Brock and James recognize the figure in the painting as the same woman they saw at the port, and so the priest tells her story...

2,000 years ago, the maiden stood on the peak to bid farewell to the brave warrior she loved, as he sailed away to fight in a war. She waited for him at the cliff, but he never returned. There she stood, until she turned into stone. And she still awaits.

End of Summer Festival

Ash and Misty are enjoying the festival, while Brock keeps thinking about the woman he saw. Suddenly, an old woman approaches him and warns him to beware of beautiful women, lest he meets a cruel fate.

While Team Rocket scours the streets for dropped change, the old woman appears and gives James the same warning. When Officer Jenny approaches them to see what they are doing, the trio runs away and hides in a crowd gathered around a shrine.

Disembarking in Maiden's Peak

It's been a long journey, but the heroes are finally back in the mainland. Disembarking from the ferry that brought them from Hatoba Port, Ash and his friends arrive in Maiden's Peak, a port city currently celebrating its End of Summer Festival.

While getting off the ship, Brock sees a beautiful woman standing on the berth, but when he gets momentarily distracted by the other passengers debarking, the woman disappears. The same thing happens to James as Team Rocket sneaks into the port.

Giant Pokémon Island in a Kanto Region Map


Giant Pokémon Island is located south of the Kanto mainland. Accessible only by ferry, the closest locations to this island are Fuchsia City to the north, and the Seafoam Islands to the west.

Half of the island is occupied by Pokémon Land, a theme park owned by Team Rocket's boss. The other half of the island, also known as Porta Vista, is comprised of two cities: Aopulco and Hatoba Port.

Back to the Mainland

Tentacruel throws Meowth to the mangled Amusement Park with no memory of what happened, and whacks Nastina all the way to her cousin Brutella's wrecked restaurant in Aopulco. Then, all the jellyfish Pokémon retreat to the depths of the sea.

Hoping that the people of Hatoba Port remember the promise made to Tentacruel, Misty, her friends, and her new Horsea finally leave Giant Pokémon Island on a ferry boat. Following closely in a bucket tied to the aft is Team Rocket, tired, hungry, and defeated.

The Fall of Hatoba Port

Horsea pleads with Tentacruel, only to be badly beaten for defending the humans. Ash, Misty, and Brock send their Pokémon to repel the onslaught, but the creature is just too big. Pikachu also tries to reason with it, to no avail.

Misty climbs to a high rise, and accepts responsibility on behalf of the humans. She promises that they will no longer threaten their ocean home, and begs it to stop. Tentacruel finally stands down and gives them a warning: "if this happens again, we will not stop."

Hatoba Port has been decimated.

The Observation Tower

The tidal wave brings with it thousands of Tentacool that decimate the city. The crowds seek refuge in an observation tower near Nastina's Amusement Park, which is also damaged in the attack. Tentacruel then speaks through Meowth via mind control.

The humans destroyed the coral reef and the ocean home of the Tentacool; seeking revenge, they will respond in kind. Misty realizes this is what Horsea was trying to warn them when they first met.

Tidal Wave

The Tentacool that used its energy beam on Team Rocket is bathed in the Stun Sauce, causing it not only to evolve into Tentacruel, but also to grow exponentially until it becomes a gargantuan creature. The giant jellyfish destroys the resort in an instant.

Nastina reacts by firing heavy artillery at Tentacruel, but the only thing she gains with that is to anger it even more. Tentacruel speeds towards the harbor, creating a tsunami that wipes away all the buildings in the seafront and beyond.

The tsunami strikes Hatoba Port.

The Yacht Harbor

Team Rocket's plan is to pour their Super-Secret Stun Sauce on the Tentacool, and then catch them to sell in the fish market. Things take a dark turn, however, when they are surrounded by thousands of Tentacool.

With only one barrel of Stun Sauce, Team Rocket is unprepared for the barrage of the jellyfish Pokémon. One of them uses its energy beam to make the boat explode, but the barrel of Stun Sauce drops on its head, triggering a strange transformation...

The Yacht Harbor

Nastina makes a public announcement offering a substantial reward to whoever can exterminate the Tentacool. Misty is aghast when the whole town gathers at the harbor showing interest in Nastina's offer.

Chiefly among the crowd is Team Rocket. Showing up in their boat, they accept the challenge and head off to the man-made island where Nastina's Paradise Resort is in construction. A heartbroken Misty can't believe how everyone is disrespecting the ocean.
