Thanks to Drowzee's powers, the children wake up from their trance, and promptly return to their homes, none the worse for wear. Even the mom the gang met at the plaza reunites with her son, Arnold. The next stop is the Pokémon Center, where Joy awaits anxiously.

All the patients -including Pikachu- recover their health. All, that is, except Psyduck, who lives with a perpetual headache. Joy leaves Psyduck in Brock's hands, but the clumsy Pokémon chooses Misty as its trainer after she accidentally trips and her Pokéball catches it!

Drowzee's sleepwaves successfully cure Misty of her hypnotic state and she is back to normal. Ash carries Drowzee on his shoulders and prepares to return to the park, but before hitting the elevator, three hang gliders land on the terrace... it's Team Rocket!

Jessie and James use whips to capture Hypno and Drowzee, but Misty's Staryu quickly comes to the rescue and saves them. Then, Ash's Pidgeotto uses a powerful wind blast to send the intruders blasting off. With the bad guys out of the way, everyone returns to the park.

Pokémon Lovers Club Headquarters

Jenny approaches the children, and realizes that all of them firmly believe they are Pokémon; not only that, they are acting the part! Kids behaving like Weedle, like Bulbasaur, like Gloom... even one splashing in the water thinking she is a Magikarp!

The leader of the Pokémon Lovers Club suggests using Drowzee's sleep waves to counteract Hypno's power and cure the children of their "Pokénitis." The group agrees to this plan, and they return to the penthouse mansion, bringing Misty with them.

The investigators conclude that when Hypno started using its abilities on the socialites to help them rest, the sleep waves propagated all over town, stealing the Pokémon of their energy, and causing the children to run away from their homes.

To test this theory, Misty lets Hypno use its powers on her, and immediately, she is hypnotized into believing she is a Seel. Misty runs away from the mansion, and down the building to a nearby park. It's here where all the missing children are finally found!

Rather than a terrace, or even a penthouse, the group finds instead a luxurious mansion sitting on top of the building, adorned with lush gardens, fountains, and hedge mazes. Ash and Brock charge towards the immense double doors, revealing the interior of the manor.

A group of rich socialites calling themselves the "Pokémon Lovers Club" are gathered around a Drowzee and a Hypno. Suffering from insomnia due to their busy urban lives, the socialites have been relying on Hypno for the past three days to help them sleep at night.

Officer Jenny tells the gang that her sleep wave detector started buzzing three days ago, right when the children disappeared and the Pokémon lost their energy. Now, the device takes the investigators to a skyscraper in the heart of town.

The detector shows that the source of the waves is somewhere on the top floor of the residential building, so the group takes an elevator. Expecting to find a simple rooftop terrace, the group is shocked by what they see when the elevator doors open.

Team Rocket's Sleep Wave Detector

As the gang and Officer Jenny decide to follow the readings of her portable detector, Pikachu is affected by the sleep waves, and loses all its energy. With even more reasons to solve this mystery, the investigators leave the Pokémon Center and head downtown.

Meanwhile, Jessie, James, and Meowth arrive in HopHopHop Town after tracking the strange sleep waves using an advanced, long-range detector. Their goal is to find the source, so they use it to put their boss Giovanni to sleep, and go on vacation while he snoozes.

Nurse Joy takes Ash, Misty, Brock, Pikachu, and Officer Jenny to the infirmary, so they can see the sick Pokémon: Cubone, Oddish, and Magikarp are completely lethargic; the flame on Charmander's tail is about to fade out, and Psyduck is the sickest of them all.

The mystery deepens when Joy tells them that the Pokémon started to get sick three days ago, which is exactly when the children disappeared. Then, Jenny's portable sleep wavelength detector starts buzzing; they deduce that all these events are connected.

Officer Jenny and the gang go to the HopHopHop Pokémon Center to interview children who may hold clues as to the whereabouts of those that went missing three days ago. None of the kids have any idea where the other children may have gone.

Ash and Misty talk to Nurse Joy as part of the investigation, but she is busy with a mystery of her own: She is taking care of five Pokémon that have lost all their energy, and she cannot understand why!

At that precise moment, Officer Jenny arrives in her motorcycle to hang a "Missing Child" poster on a nearby wall that is already covered with many of them. Even she is amazed and saddened by the situation, and wonders what could be the cause of such tragedy.

While Brock is infatuated with Officer Jenny, and offers to help her in the investigation, Ash can't help but feel sorry for the concerned mother, who reminds him of his own mom, Delia. He decides, then, that he will be part of the investigation as well.

The gang takes the distressed woman to a nearby plaza, where they help her collect herself. She explains that she is looking for her son, Arnold, who disappeared three days ago without notice. He is not a Pokémon trainer, so, there is no chance he took off on a journey.

The worried mother startles everyone when she tells them that Arnold is not the only one missing; there are more children around town that have disappeared without leaving a trace. Is HopHopHop Town a dangerous place for children?

After receiving a Rainbow Badge from gym leader Erika for his bravery, Ash explores the suburbs of Celadon City with Misty, Brock, and Pikachu. Today, they gang is touring HopHopHop Town, an urban center where the wealthy and affluent people of Celadon live.

The stroll comes to an end when an anguished woman runs to Ash, hugs him, and calls him Arnold. Startled, Ash explains that she must be mistaking him for someone else. Upon realizing her mistake, the woman apologizes and starts crying.

The fire has been extinguished at the now destroyed Celadon Gym. Erika celebrates that everyone is safe, and reassures her Pokémon and the assistant trainers that they will rebuild, and the gym will be better than ever.

Even though the match could not continue, Erika gives Ash a Rainbow Badge for the bravery he demonstrated when he entered the building to rescue Gloom despite the danger. With five badges in his belt, Ash is one step closer to the Pokémon League!

Ash approaches Gloom knowing that its terrible smell will knock him out, but the grass Pokémon does not use its Foul Odor attack against the one who is trying to rescue it. Ash takes Gloom in his arms and against all odds, both emerge from the burning building unscathed.

Not far away, Team Rocket hides inside a pile of water main pipes, ready to enjoy the luxurious aroma of their loot. When they open the stolen vial, the most stinking smell envelops them completely; the perfume secret formula is an extract of Gloom's reeking nectar!

Conflagration at the Celadon Gym

The explosion causes a fire to spread throughout the gym. Erika orders the evacuation of the premises, and the trainers promptly take all the Pokémon outside. Misty's Starmie and Staryu, as well as Ash's Squirtle use their Water Guns while the firefighters arrive.

Erika takes a census of all the Pokémon, and realizes that her Gloom is nowhere to be found. Ash realizes it is still in the gym, and with no regard for his own safety, rushes back inside, following its cries for help. Gloom is in the stage terrified, and surrounded by fire.

The Celadon Gym is ablaze.

In the first round of the battle, Erika's Tangela defeats Ash's Bulbasaur with its Stun Spore attack. For the second round, Ash thinks of sending Primeape, but it is too wild, so he sends Charmander, who knocks out Erika's Weepinbell with its Skull Bash attack.

When the third round between Pikachu and Erika's Gloom is about to start, Team Rocket barges in. Meowth sets the bomb off sooner than Jessie and James expected, but despite getting blasted off, they feel victorious because they stole the secret formula.

Ashley is taken to Erika, the gym leader, who is reading a story to the grass Pokémon and the assistant trainers. Much to Ashley's surprise, Misty, Brock, and Pikachu are part of the audience, and even worse, Erika, the gym leader, is also the perfumery manager!

Pikachu recognizes Ash instantly, and when he tries to shoo it away, it shocks him, revealing his true identity. Erika tries to kick Ash out, but when he challenges her, she has no option but to accept. Meanwhile, Jessie and James find the perfume secret formula in a vault.

Disguised as a happy family, Ash and Team Rocket return that night to the Celadon Gym with the pretext of enrolling "daughter Ashley" into Pokémon training classes. Ash recognizes the receptionist as one of the perfumery sales girls, but she does not see through his charade.

While "Ashley" registers at the reception desk, Jessie and James ditch their costumes to continue looking for the secret formula, and Meowth plants a blaster in the gym's combat stage as retribution for kicking them out earlier.

Team Rocket puts a girl's dress on Ash, give him the name "Ashley," and make him practice until he speaks with a soft and angelical voice. The disguise is perfect; none of the gym's assistant trainers will recognize him.

Jessie and James dress up as an older couple, so they can pretend to be Ashley's parents, and Meowth will be smuggled in James' suit to make him seem like he has a big gut. Looking like a happy family, the group leaves the Department Store and heads to the gym.

"Find what you need at the Celadon Department Store!" Against his best judgment, Ash has accepted Team Rocket's proposal for a temporary truce. He helps them get off the tree where they were tied, and in exchange they will help him sneak into the Pokémon gym.

In order to do so, Jessie, James, and Meowth take Ash to the largest shop in the entire Kanto Region: the Celadon Department Store. There, they look for the perfect disguise that will get Ash into the gym without being recognized.

The Celadon Gym assistant trainers escort Team Rocket out of the facilities, stamp their faces with a big red "X" to indicate their banned status, and hang them from a tree in a nearby park for breaking the local "No Thieves Allowed" clause.

Ash, who has also been banished, is walking through the park when he runs into the trio of misfits. Jessie suggests a temporary truce: if he unties them and helps them down the tree, they will help him sneak back into the gym to challenge the leader for a badge.

The Greenhouse

While searching for the perfume secret formula in the greenhouse, Team Rocket finds a Gloom napping. Rather than walking away from the foul-smelling Pokémon, James wakes it up, and startled, makes Koffing use Poison Gas attack against it.

To everyone's surprise, Gloom does not even flinch as it inhales the poison gas. Instead, the grass Pokémon metabolizes it and gives it out as a fume so stinky, so putrid, so revolting, that Team Rocket is instantly shattered to pieces.

After getting kicked out of the Perfumery, Ash heads to the Pokémon Gym, which is where he actually wants to be. Much to his dismay, however, he is denied entry upon arriving. Word has spread that he is badmouthing the local fragrances and is banned from the facilities.

Meanwhile, Team Rocket is sneaking into the gym, which also serves as a perfume factory. Seeking to steal the secret formula for the most popular scent, Jessie, James, and Meowth enter the building through a back window, and look for the greenhouse.

Misty and Pikachu enter a Perfumery to try out fragrances, while Brock is glued to the window shop looking at the sales girls. Misty considers buying a heavenly "Daffodil Dreams" scent, when Ash barges in to embarrass her.

Making inappropriate comments about the merchandise, Ash claims that perfumes are an expensive, bad-smelling rip-off. He is overheard by the store manager, and after a brief argument, she has the young trainer kicked out of her shop.

Ash is kicked out of the Perfumery.

Celadon City is a large metropolitan center. Although not as big as Saffron, Celadon is the most populated city in the Kanto Region, as well as the most urbanized. The city of rainbow dreams is most renown for its skyscrapers and its world-class scents.

Pikachu is attracted by the floral aromas of the perfumes. Misty, by their elegance and sophistication. Brock, by the beautiful women that must be wearing them. And Ash? he does not care at all for perfumes; he wants to find the local Pokémon Gym.
